   Steel detailing is a craft, an art, if you will, and don't let anybody or any market/political force tell you otherwise. As a detailer, you are the central point around which the steel fabrication and erection industry of the United States revolves.

   Now, more than ever, the success of a steel framing project depends upon your knowledge, experience, and shear will. Are you prepared for this challenge?

   Time was, not too long ago, the steel detailer began his or her career as an apprentice, like a carpenter or a stone mason. It was my very good fortune to have been trained in this manner. Almost all of my fundamental skills were taught to me by an experienced detailer, in a one on one environment. Some people say those days are long gone. We at ISDI say they are not, and ask the questions "If the proper training of steel detailers is allowed to die out, what will the industry do without its core provider? Who but the detailer is going to put this building together?"

   As everyone knows and is growing weary of, design document quality and completeness continues its downward spiral. The reasons are not really important, and are too many to mention. Most U.S. fabricators and erectors are running on very small margins. The steel frame must go up without error and on time. The industry demands that you, the detailer, make it happen.
